This past weekend I took my daughter to see the Statue of Liberty. What was supposed to be a rainy day turned into a bright sunny day to the point of us taking off layers.
The interesting part about this trip was the mere fact that she saw Liberty and quickly moved on. Not because she was not interested but I noticed she was overwhelmed by the heat and all the moving people surrounding her. Her main goal was to see Liberty’s face. How was I going to explain to my four year old daughter that was not going to happen this trip.
Once we climbed down the steps and made our way to the open court yard, the kids were hungry, thirsty and tired. So were we, the parents. So we parked under some shaed, drank plenty of water and shared some food. Meanwhile the kids got back their strength, and started running after birds. My husband and I tried to figure out our next move. We then discovered the Liberty Museum.
This museum not only allowed my daughter to finally see Liberty’s face up close and personal by having a mold of her but also taught her and us as to why she stood in front of us that day. She was there to show all people have the freedom to choose what they wish with their hearts. Freedom to live, love, and to choose what paths they want to take in their lives. Liberty stood in a harbor to show peace among countries and people. She stood to represent hope for those willing to dream.
This trip started off as a small childish adventure but did it remind me we all have the right to our freedom. History and Liberty showcase this fact. We all have the same beating organ inside of us. Just like those who have overcome hardships in the past against all odds, so will this generation in this chaotic time.
My daughter’s wish to take the green lady on a kids map led us to a family trip I will never forget. It led me to remember all our hearts are free and we individually get to choose what is next. But, if we come together with one inspirational goal, a grand gesture can remind millions we are all the same on a daily and historical basis.
